I did a lot of prep work before I began my internship at Walt Disney World. One reoccurring theme I found was that being a college program intern, you will make friends all over the world. This sentiment was echoed during a conversation I had with an employee at Downtown Disney a few days before I officially started my program. He told me how he had been a CP several times and had best friends all throughout the country that he saw often.
Now I was not opposed to this idea, but I felt a little suspicious of it. I have a very tight group of best friends, some of which I have known since middle school. Although I thought it would be great to make friends, I doubted I would ever find ones that compared to my BFFs I had back home.
But as you all know, these posts are not about how I was right in my premonitions. Rather they are a reflection on how Disney taught me to think differently. So, in the four months I was down in sunny Orlando, I did in fact meet tons of incredible, amazing people, and many of them became my best friends. I made several friends at work, became instant BFFs with my seven roommates, and met several great people through college program events or simply hanging out around the parks.
Plus, one of the best parts about having all these friends (besides the obvious benefits of friendship – laughter, support, love, memories, etc), is that I really do have people to visit with all over the world haha!! I already took advantage of this in May when I visited Gainesville (Thanks Dre!) and Orlando (Love you Katey!). Many of my old roommates live in Pennsylvania (Hello Bri and Chelsea!) and another is in Texas (Miss you Rei!), so I can’t wait to see visit them all one day! And next time I am in Florida, you better believe I will be seeing my Miami roomie Kei and one of my favorite co-workers Mark! I also have plans to visit my friends in California (Hi Kimmy and Cahil!!)…maybe even London, ahh!
There are many wonderful things that happen because of the Disney College Program, but I think the number one benefit is the people you meet and the friendships you make. And these friendships are not fleeting ones; I truly believe that they will last a lifetime. These are people that I will forever talk to, visit…some will even play a part in my one-day wedding! I am so grateful to have made the friendships I now have, to call each and every one of them my friend, and because of that, I will be forever thankful for the program.
