11 Healthy Habits That Will Help You Live To 100

11 Healthy Habits That Will Help You Live To 100

I loved this article on MSN Health today and thought I’d share it. I consider myself pretty healhty but some of these suprised me. What do you think?

1. Don’t retire.

“Evidence shows that in societies where people stop working abruptly, the incidence of obesity and chronic disease skyrockets after retirement,” says Luigi Ferrucci, director of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. The Chianti region of Italy, which has a high percentage of centenarians, has a different take on leisure time. “After people retire from their jobs, they spend most of the day working on their little farm, cultivating grapes or vegetables,” he says. “They’re never really inactive.” Farming isn’t for you? Volunteer as a docent at your local art museum or join the Experience Corps, a program offered in 19 cities that places senior volunteers in urban public elementary schools for about 15 hours a week.

2. Floss every day.

That may help keep your arteries healthy. A 2008 New York University study showed that daily flossing reduced the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria is thought to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation in the arteries, a major risk factor for heart disease. Other research has shown that those who have high amounts of bacteria in their mouth are more likely to have thickening in their arteries, another sign of heart disease. “I really do think people should floss twice a day to get the biggest life expectancy benefits,” says Perls.

3. Move around.

“Exercise is the only real fountain of youth that exists,” says Jay Olshansky, a professor of medicine and aging researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “It’s like the oil and lube job for your car. You don’t have to do it, but your car will definitely run better.” Study after study has documented the benefits of exercise to improve your mood, mental acuity, balance, muscle mass, and bones. “And the benefits kick in immediately after your first workout,” Olshansky adds. Don’t worry if you’re not a gym rat. Those who see the biggest payoffs are the ones who go from doing nothing to simply walking around the neighborhood or local mall for about 30 minutes a day. Building muscle with resistance training is also ideal, but yoga classes can give you similar strength-training effects if you’re not into weight lifting.

4. Eat a fiber-rich cereal for breakfast.

Getting a serving of whole-grains, especially in the morning, appears to help older folks maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day, according to a recent study conducted by Ferrucci and his colleagues. “Those who do this have a lower incidence of diabetes, a known accelerator of aging,” he says.

5. Get at least six hours of shut-eye.

Instead of skimping on sleep to add more hours to your day, get more to add years to your life. “Sleep is one of the most important functions that our body uses to regulate and heal cells,” says Ferrucci. “We’ve calculated that the minimum amount of sleep that older people need to get those healing REM phases is about six hours.” Those who reach the century mark make sleep a top priority.

6. Consume whole foods, not supplements.

Strong evidence suggests that people who have high blood levels of certain nutrients—selenium, beta-carotene, vitamins C and E—age much better and have a slower rate of cognitive decline. Unfortunately, there’s no evidence that taking pills with these nutrients provides those antiaging benefits. “There are more than 200 different carotenoids and 200 different flavonoids in a single tomato,” points out Ferrucci, “and these chemicals can all have complex interactions that foster health beyond the single nutrients we know about like lycopene or vitamin C.” Avoid nutrient-lacking white foods (breads, flour, sugar) and go for all those colorful fruits and vegetables and dark whole-grain breads and cereals with their host of hidden nutrients.

7. Be less neurotic.

It may work for Woody Allen, who infuses his worries with a healthy dose of humor, but the rest of us neurotics may want to find a new way to deal with stress. “We have a new study coming out that shows that centenarians tend not to internalize things or dwell on their troubles,” says Perls. “They are great at rolling with the punches.” If this inborn trait is hard to overcome, find better ways to manage when you’re stressed: Yoga, exercise, meditation, tai chi, or just deep breathing for a few moments are all good. Ruminating, eating chips in front of the TV, binge drinking? Bad, very bad.

8. Live like a Seventh Day Adventist.

Americans who define themselves as Seventh Day Adventists have an average life expectancy of 89, about a decade longer than the average American. One of the basic tenets of the religion is that it’s important to cherish the body that’s on loan from God, which means no smoking, alcohol abuse, or overindulging in sweets. Followers typically stick to a vegetarian diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts, and get plenty of exercise. They’re also very focused on family and community.

9. Be a creature of habit.

Centenarians tend to live by strict routines, says Olshansky, eating the same kind of diet and doing the same kinds of activities their whole lives. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is another good habit to keep your body in the steady equilibrium that can be easily disrupted as you get on in years. “Your physiology becomes frailer when you get older,” explains Ferrucci, “and it’s harder for your body to bounce back if you, say, miss a few hours of sleep one night or drink too much alcohol.” This can weaken immune defenses, leaving you more susceptible to circulating flu viruses or bacterial infections.

10. Stay connected.

Having regular social contacts with friends and loved ones is key to avoiding depression, which can lead to premature death, something that’s particularly prevalent in elderly widows and widowers. Some psychologists even think that one of the biggest benefits elderly folks get from exercise the strong social interactions that come from walking with a buddy or taking a group exercise class. Having a daily connection with a close friend or family member gives older folks the added benefit of having someone watch their back. “They’ll tell you if they think your memory is going or if you seem more withdrawn,” says Perls, “and they might push you to see a doctor before you recognize that you need to see one yourself.”

11. Be conscientious.

The strongest personality predictor of a long life is conscientiousness—that is, being prudent, persistent, and well organized, according to The Longevity Project, coauthored by Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin. The book describes a study that followed 1,500 children for eight decades, collecting exhaustive details about their personal histories, health, activities, beliefs, attitudes, and families. The children who were prudent and dependable lived the longest, Friedman says, likely because conscientious types are more inclined to follow doctors’ orders, take the right medicines at the right doses, and undergo routine checkups. They’re also likelier to report happier marriages and more satisfying work lives than their less conscientious peers.

Cha Cha Cha Changes | The Site, My Life & More

My first week of 2012 didn’t go exactly as planned. I have been sick as a dog. Like don’t-want-to-get-out-of-bed sick. Today is the first day I feel somewhat human and motivated.

The past few months have been a struggle to say the least. The loss of my Dad was devastating. I still can’t believe he is gone. I still cry. I still grieve. I still ask why. As I sat with him one day, just a few days after arriving, the feeling of helplessness that came over me was overwhelming. Martina McBride’s I’m Gonna Love You Through It became my daily mantra. All I could do for him was BE there and love him through it. We watched 100 hours of the history channel, old westerns, and I now know every word to more old country classics than I ever knew existed. I’ll forever cherish that time with him. It was a blessing, made possible for many reasons, but mostly because of YOU. Because of this site, and the unwavering support of my readers, I was able to pick up my life in Kentucky and go to Florida to be with my Dad. Posts were slow, even non-existent at times. And yet you continued to be there, send emails, and support me. The debt of gratitude that I feel for all of you, most of whom I will never meet, is indescribable. Thank you!

My mother died when I was very young and Dad had it hard…so did we. I had daily chores, strict rules and was never, ever spoiled monetarily. If I wanted something, I worked for it. He instilled a strong work ethic in me and I thank him for that. In the weeks I spent with him before he passed, he asked me a lot of questions about the site, my future, my husband’s job, etc… I know it was his way of making sure we’d be ok. One day I looked at him and said, “Dad, don’t worry. You taught us to be strong women and we’ll all be ok.” And with that in mind, I know the best way to honor my father is to do just that. So I have big changes in store for the site and in my life.

In my personal life ~

I want my husband home. He is DONE with this “working all over the world” stuff. I don’t care if he takes a loss in pay and all the “what if’s”. Our time with the ones we love is limited and we’ve been separated for the better part of 10 years. While I am SO proud of the work he does and how it’s supports our armed forces, I simply just miss my husband. So, we are taking a giant leap of faith, he is NOT resigning his contract in June and we are moving to the city we love: Nashville. Why am I telling you this? Because in doing this I will be implementing every frugal, money-saving strategy I know of, which goes far beyond just using coupons. I want to share it all with you in hopes that you too can learn something along the way.

When we move, he will be unemployed, which is scary. I will be supporting our family, double scary. I have 6 months to work my tail off, build my stockpile (as this will be an essential part of making ends meet when we move), sell our house, find a place to live, and move. It’s a lot, but I believe that this is what we are supposed to do. The day we made the decision, I felt a strange sense of calm in spite of the of the massive to-do list I instantly received!

I will also strive to:

  • Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier.
  • Eat breakfast. I’m guilty of drinking coffee until 1 PM…not good.
  • Move more. Sitting for hours each day has taken it’s toll. I am buying a treadmill and using it!
  • Make better use of my time, which will include staying off of Facebook and Pinterest until work is done.
  • Take better care of myself. My siblings and I have just been catapulted into a “high risk” cancer group, which scares the crap out of me. Time to schedule all of those checkups I’ve avoided for years…
  • Stick to my new schedule. (More on this below.)
  • Take Sunday off. No more working 7 days a week!

In my blogging life ~

Saving money is SMART. Unless you just have soooo much money that saving money isn’t necessary, it is SMART to be frugal and conscious of your spending. I’m smart with my money and save every penny I can. Why? Because I truly believe that a penny saved, is a penny earned. My original vision for the site was to share how I save in all aspects of my life, not just by using coupons. How I save every day. I feel I have failed at that and apologize.  Also, there are just too many coupon sites now. It’s all the same information, same deals…it’s redundant. So that being said, I am stepping away from posting so many coupon deals. Before you panic:

  • Don’t worry, I’ll still post deals but I feel that the majority of my readers really only want the very best deals. The matchups are VERY time consuming. One store can take hours to do. Do you really care that there is a $1 off coupon for a $9 bottle of Tide? I don’t, and I am assuming most of you don’t either. So I have a new schedule that I will be sticking to like glue starting next week.

There are more ways to save money than just coupons and I’ll be sharing them with you each week:

  • Saving Money 101” – I’ll share with you some of the ways I have saved my family tons money. From working with your creditors, to negotiating your bills, to clever ways to save.
  • Frugal Tips & Tricks” – A completely random series of fun tips and tricks from how to make your own shampoo (it’s awesome) to my personal (frugal) picks for beauty, fashion, etc…
  • Budget Recipes” – I love cooking more than I love coupons. Yep, I said it! That is where my true passion lies and I haven’t been able to do much lately. I’ll get back to showing you how you CAN feed your family healthy meals on a budget.
  • And I will also be doing more videos. Sometimes I just want to talk to you…it’s so much easier than typing!

I will continue to:

  • Post coupon deals and store matchups, but with only the “best of the best” deals.
  • Continue to save for our next Disney trip and provide Disney related tips. In addition, I will revive the “Photo of the Day” series (but change it to a weekly post), show you what I am adding to my fund and how I got it. My daughter will continue her Disney Articles. She is the true writer in the family (and my editor haha).
  • Post online and daily deals that I feel are worth sharing. I am a HUGE believer in having a gift stockpile. I literally shopped from my gift stockpile this Christmas and it saved me a ton of money.
  • Post new and hot printable grocery, retail and restaurant coupons…of course!
  • Provide ways to make a little extra money online. It won’t make you rich, but if you want to make an extra $500 – $1,000 a year, it’s doable!

You can look forward to all of this and more starting next week. I look forward to another AWESOME year with all of you, and as always, thank you for your support, emails and feedback. Feel free to email me anytime with any deals you find, tips you’d like to share, and just to say hi! I feel my readers are an extension of my family and love hearing from you.

Lastly, I wouldn’t have got through the past few months without the help of many people. First, my daughter. She has been by my side every day. She has helped me more than words can say and I cannot thank her enough. I love you honey! Some awesome bloggy friends who did my matchups for me and offered constant support: Janae at Keeping Cents, Michelle at Money Saving Madness, and Sue at Save The Coupons…thanks girls!!  My incredible family for always being there to support and love one another. And my husband who flew back and forth from Afghanistan and has been there for me via messenger, phone, and email every single day. I love you and miss you ♥

When It Rains, It Pours…

Questions & Answers

I’m sure by now everyone has noticed the lack of posts and may be wondering what the heck is going on…

I am actually sitting in a hospital bed typing this!! On Saturday, I started having stomach pain but didn’t think much of it. Sunday it was still there, but I still tried to ignore it and pass it off as something simple. By Monday I felt awful and thought I could just go up to the walk-in clinic and get this taken care of quickly. Wrong. They sent me right to the ER. They were so sure it was my appendix that they had already called a surgeon. My appendix was fine but they did find a “mass” in my abdomen, so I was admitted on Monday night and am still here. They are not 100% sure but suspect an acute case of diverticulitis which is pretty darn painful. Working is out of the question because they have me on so much medication that I stay doped up.

Soooo, I am pretty frustrated at this point. I came to take care of my Dad and wound up sitting in the hospital myself! I don’t know when I’ll be released but posts should resume in a few days!

Update On Care Packages | We Have An Address

Why I Love Coupons: My Hubby's Box

First let me say, WOW, and THANK-YOU! I was shocked to see the amount of email in my inbox last night. It brought instant tears to my eyes and my husband was at a loss for words when I told him! I can’t thank-you all enough! I have been very busy all morning coordinating all of this with my hubby (dealing with horrible phone reception), so I am behind on email but will reply to everyone tonight at the latest!

My husband spoke to the Chaplin and they set up a new address for the boxes to go. The Chaplin will deliver the items to where they are most needed. The address is:

Chaplin Hamilton/PTDS
FOB SHANK (cop SAYED ABAD)
APO AE 09364

Many of you also wanted to know if there were women on the camp. There were two, but they were flown out immediately after this happened. Since the chow hall and food conexes were destroyed, the items most needed are food. Anything non-perishable is perfect. Ready-to-eat meals, snacks, canned goods, etc… If you use the boxes I told you about, there is no weight limit, so it will only cost $10.95. I am sending a mix of HBA items and food. Check out the Shop For Free lists and the Recent Coupon Matchups to snag some cheap items!

Thank-you thank-you thank-you!!!

Care Packages Desperately Needed Overseas!!

Care Boxes Desparately Needed Overseas

You may have heard on the news of the camp that was hit yesterday in Afghanistan. That was my husband’s camp. There were several injured and, sadly, a few lives lost. The picture above was once his bedroom…

Although I cannot go into detail, I can tell you that the PX, chow hall, food conexes, chapel, and the gym are gone. They are in desperate need of care packages! Food, toiletries…anything you can send. If you can’t send a package, even letters of support would be appreciated! They have no way to cook right now, so ready-to-eat meals would be great. Since we have been stocking up for our Operation Shoe Box donations, I have enough to send at least 4 or 5 good size boxes. PLEASE send what you can! For an idea of how to pack a box, see the last box I sent. The post office has a flat rate shipping box that only costs $10.95 to ship to any APO/FPO address. You can pick them up at any U.S. Post Office (ask for the military flat rate box).

If you’d like to send a box please contact me for the address. Thank-you for your support. Please keep all those overseas in your thoughts and prayers.

PLEASE share this so we can get them as much help as possible!Share On Facebook

What Do You Do With Your Freebies? My Freebie Bowl

My Freebie Bowl

I receive a lot of questions about how I store my stockpile and free samples. Since freebies can range from food to medicine, there are a few different things I do.

I keep a big decorative bowl on the counter full of snacks that I’ve either got free in the mail or that were free after coupons. Everyone that comes to my house knows where the bowl is and helps themselves, so it is constantly being refilled. I also have three drawers in the kitchen that I use for free samples. One for pet products, one for food and one for cleaning/laundry supplies. All of the health and beauty samples are kept upstairs in my stockpile room, separated into baskets. My favorite way to use them is for traveling…they’re perfect for packing light on an overnight trip!

So how do use your freebies?

Update On Husband…

He doesn’t need surgery…YAY!! As I mentioned yesterday, my husband’s surgery had been tentatively scheduled for Friday, but at his follow up appointment, the doctor examined him again and said that the tear could heal on it’s own with bed rest and minimal activity. This is such a blessing! Abdominal surgery is a major ordeal which usually requires long recovery. So, although the circumstances are not exactly what we’d have wished for, having him home for 4-6 weeks is wonderful and he’ll get lots of TLC. Now if I can get him to follow doctor’s orders and take it easy. Not an easy thing for most men to do…especially my husband :-)

Thank-you for the continued emails and support *hugs*
